DECAR-CON

Decarbonisation of construction process for buildings in Ireland

Contents

Project description

The construction sector is crucial to Ireland’s social and economic development. However, it also poses environmental challenges and significantly contributes to climate change. Construction and the built environment account for 37% of Ireland’s emissions, with 14% of that coming from embodied carbon emissions linked to the production of materials and their transportation, construction practices, maintenance, repair, and disposal of buildings and infrastructure.

The DECAR-CON project will set a baseline for carbon emissions at construction sites in Ireland and develop a roadmap with solutions for decarbonising contractors’ construction processes (Modules A4 & A5 of BS EN 15978), accommodating variations depending on the project.

Goal

The primary outcome of the project is the launch of a roadmap to reduce the carbon emissions of the construction process and develop a methodology for evaluating the carbon emissions associated with A4 and A5.

Timeline

12 months (January to December 2025) – extended to end of August 2026
