Best practice for incorporating and maintaining new nature-led residential developments at scale

This report explores potential solutions to barriers which prevent to mainstream biodiversity in new residential development in Ireland

Ireland faces a unique challenge and opportunity. With a growing population and a target to build 50,000 new homes per year by 2040 – and associated infrastructure, there is a real risk of accelerating biodiversity loss unless nature is integrated into development from the start. The scale of new developments also presents the opportunity to “get it right” by embedding biodiversity at scale.

This report presents the findings of the 2nd phase of the BIO-NEIGHBOUR project and builds on the outputs of Report D1.2, which documented the current state of practice and identified typical constraints, including key barriers. This new report explores potential solutions to these constraints, drawing on both national and international examples of best practice.
