Material Passports
Project description
Ireland is committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, with Ireland’s building environment responsible for 37% of Ireland’s emissions (IGBC, 2022), together with related construction and demolition (C&D) waste as the largest waste stream with 6.2 million tonnes produced annually (EPA, 2021). In this context, Material Passports (MP) document materials present in a product or building. Beyond identifying what components are being used, MP not only can provide insight into how sustainable, recyclable, healthy, and safe they are, but also allows calculation of specific value of a building’s material worth and implementation of circular design and strategy.
Goal
- A quantification of circular economy benefits using material passports, as well as a set of policy and regulation recommendations on the application of material passport in Ireland.
- To showcase, for the first time in Ireland, the use of Material Passports in both new and existing buildings.
Timeline
March 2026 (Extended to June 2026).
