Regulatory Sandbox
Project description
Decarbonising the built environment requires innovation in materials and processes. However, the construction industry has lagged behind others in adopting innovations due to the complex interplay between innovation and regulation. The Regulatory Sandbox project will explore how innovative regulatory approaches could help accelerate Ireland’s decarbonisation efforts. A regulatory sandbox offers a safe and controlled space, bringing together innovators and regulators to cooperate, test, and learn about new products, services, or methodologies under regulatory oversight. This project will develop a sandbox concept suited to the Irish context, aiming to address regulatory areas of tension and support greener construction and innovation in the built environment
Goal
- Identify and address regulatory barriers that hinder innovation in green construction.
- Develop a regulatory sandbox concept tailored to the Irish built environment.
- Support innovation in materials and processes and the decarbonisation of Ireland’s built environment.
Timeline
15 months (January 2025 – March 2026) – extended to July 2026
