The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced updated certification deadlines for LEED v4 and LEED v4.1, marking an important milestone in the transition toward LEED v5.

Under the newly released timelines, project teams have a clear window to plan registrations, certifications, and future sustainability strategies.

Key Dates

  • 30 June 2026 – Final date to register new projects under LEED v4 or LEED v4.1
  • 30 June 2032 – Final certification (sunset) date for projects registered under v4/v4.1

After June 2026, LEED v5 will become the active standard for all new project registrations.

What This Means for Project Teams

For teams currently working with LEED or considering certification, this extended runway offers valuable flexibility. Projects already registered under LEED v4 or v4.1 can continue working toward certification for several years, allowing time to complete construction, commissioning, and documentation without rushing the process.

At the same time, the announcement provides clarity for teams deciding whether to:

  • Register upcoming projects under LEED v4 or v4.1 before the 2026 deadline, or
  • Begin preparing for LEED v5, which introduces updated performance expectations around carbon, resilience, equity, and health.

Planning for the Transition to LEED v5

LEED v5 represents a significant evolution of the certification system, with a stronger focus on decarbonisation, climate resilience, and measurable performance outcomes. For many organisations, the next two years will be a critical period to assess internal capacity, project pipelines, and sustainability ambitions.  Know More

Early planning will help teams:

  • Align certification pathways with broader ESG and climate targets
  • Avoid last-minute registration pressures
  • Make informed decisions about which LEED version best supports project goals

Why This Update Matters

Clear timelines reduce uncertainty and support better decision-making across the built environment sector. Whether you’re managing existing LEED projects, planning new developments, or reviewing sustainability strategies, these deadlines provide an opportunity to act with confidence and foresight.

Project teams are encouraged to review their certification plans early and consider how upcoming projects can best align with both current LEED frameworks and the next generation of green building standards.
